I barely remember the fact of waking up. The pain under the left rib was huge. I was lying on the bed as if in a dentist’s chair. I could not move. The gas under my ribs was nagging. I was breathing at half way, even though they told me to breathe deeply because my lungs were quite lazy. The whole day was foggy. The morphine was doing its job. My only dream was to get up and let out all the post-operative gases. Unfortunately, during the night I vomited blood, a lot of blood about 120 ml. There was an alarm raised on the ward. Within a dozen minutes I had five doctors over me. Internal bleeding? I was not allowed to move. There was no way of me getting up. The pain under my ribs was unbearable. Agony. In the morning blood count results came back. It turned out that I had vomited blood that had entered my small stomach while they were sewing it. I was finally able to stand up and walk. After a few hours, the pain under my ribs was gone. What a relief! I only took the painkillers until tomorrow. After that, it got only better. The shower vitalised me. I walked back and forth in the ward’s corridor. I was given disgusting oXo cubes to drink. Yuck. Sugar-free jellies, protein yoghurts and tea with milk was better, although with every sip of these products my stomach gave out spasms. And so it got better and better day by day, until finally, after 4 days, I went home on Sunday. Happy days.
