Proteins… Not everyone realises that one of the biggest sources of protein is red meat. I was on a short holiday where I had the opportunity to eat steak tartare. It is a dish made with excellent quality raw beef, raw egg yolk, salt and oil, topped with finely chopped onions, pickled cucumber, mushrooms with addition of wholegrain mustard. Delicious!

According to Wikipedia, a popular caricature of Turkish warriors called Tartars depicts them tenderising meat under their saddles and then eating it raw. The story was popularised by the French chronicler Jean de Joinville in the 13th century, although he never actually met the Tartars and used the story as a way of showing that the Tartars were uncivilised.
